To laugh is to risk appearing the fool.

To weep is to risk appearing sentimental.

To reach for another is to risk involvement.

To expose your ideas, your dream, before a

crowd is to risk their loss.

To love is to risk not being loved in return.

To live is to risk dying.

To believe is to risk failure.

But risks must be taken, because the greatest

hazard in life is to risk nothing.

they may avoid suffering and sorrow, but they

cannot learn, feel, change, grow, love live.

Chained by there attitudes, they are slaves; they

have forfeited their freedom.

Only a person who risks is free.

This weekend i had one of the best talks with my dad. We talked about my major and how it might play out in my life. He told me that he was not sure that being an adventure education major was a good idea. My dad being my dad i think he was thinking that it would be hard to make it in this world with that major. But he then went on to say that, but if it  makes you happy, and these days it is what makes you happy,  that is important. It was hard for me to understand the true importance of this talk until i read this poem. The last line “Only a person who risks is free” is by far the most meaningful statement to me at this time. At this time in my life it is more clear to me than ever that life is a treasure that can be stolen from you in a second. I have always felt like i need to live my life so it’s worth living. Now i truly understand what that means. I now know why i strive to hit a 60 foot snowbaording jump or climb up a 2000 foot cliff. Not to have people say, wow, not to get money, i do it for me……..because that is the only way i can be free……………….

to people who read this poem, find something that gets you excited, do something that you love, life is too short to try and make the most money possible……find your wealth inside of your self.
